Preschool and Kindergarten Registration at YK1

Sponsored by YK1

Whether you have been a Yellowknifer for years, have recently moved or are planning to move to the city, enrolling your little one in school for the first time can be a daunting and emotional process.

There are many factors to consider when enrolling your four or five-year-old in school for the first time – What do surrounding schools offer? How will my child benefit from the school’s programming? Which school is the best fit for our family?

At Yellowknife Education District No.1, staff and administration want to make sure that every step of the transition is seamless and that all questions that come along with Preschool and Kindergarten enrollment are answered. Whether it’s French Immersion, Montessori programming or Aboriginal Language and Culture experiences, YK1 schools have highly trained staff and up-to-date technological resources to suit the needs of all our diverse young learners.

“I chose to enroll my daughter at J.H Sissons School because the community at Sissons is very welcoming,” said Andrea, mother of Kindergarten student Sadee. “The programs at Sissons are culturally relevant and teaching staff are dedicated and caring.”

Nodding along with her mother, Sadee couldn’t help but agree. “I like Kindergarten at Sissons because I learn lots of French!”

Smaller schools at YK1 mean children get a much more rounded, fulfilling education.

Our smaller teacher to pupil ratios let every student get the special attention they deserve to succeed. YK1 offers a safe family atmosphere in each of their schools and ongoing, open communication between staff and parents.

“We chose N.J. Macpherson School because of its welcoming and family-like atmosphere,” said Michelle, parent of five-year-old Emma. “I really appreciate the open style of communication on not only Emma’s progress but also her social and imaginative experiences.”

Individual learning styles are not only recognized but embraced in each of our inclusive schools.

“Staff have a profound respect for each child’s personal style of behavior and acknowledge each student’s different approach to learning their school material in creative ways,” said Michelle, a parent at Range Lake North School.

YK1 celebrated its 75th anniversary last year and is proud to have educated generations of Yellowknifers.

This year, as we celebrate 35 years of French Immersion programming, we are eager to grow with current and prospective Yellowknifers.

“I chose Mildred Hall School for my son to attend because I also went to Mildred Hall School when I was a boy. I’m very impressed with the staff and teachers at Mildred Hall School, and the family events they have are great.”
